This month sees some important changes to employment law, companies of all sizes will need to be aware of. The increase in the minimum wage and the removal of the default retirement age will come as welcome news for some but for others it will mean there will be no excuse for stopping work at 65!

Certainly October brings good news for agency workers who will see some noticeable improvements to their working conditions. From this month, agency workers will be entitled to equal treatment to their directly recruited staff when it comes to basic employment conditions after they have worked for a minimum 12 weeks.

Minimum wage breaks through £6 barrier

Other changes attracting a great deal of media attention in October include an increase in the national minimum wage which breaks through the £6 barrier for the first time, rising from £5.93 to £6.08 per hour. It has also been announced that the government will remove the rights of employees to claim for unfair dismissal until they have worked for a company for at least two years.
