Children still suffering from the terrible consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster were invited for a second time to the DoubleTree by Hilton Chester for lunch as part of their four-week recuperation holiday.

The kids are visiting the UK with the Chernobyl's Children's Life Line (CCLL), which is a charity that supports seriously ill children from the Ukraine. The special lunch was held for 10 children and their host families here in the UK.

Jeannette Jones, host and member of the Chester, Deeside and Ellesmere Port CCLL link, said: "They could not have made us more welcome. Peter Hendry, the Operations Manager, was not just a host but really gave all of us his time and attention and treated the children like royalty."

The CCLL, a national charity, arrange these life-changing holidays for children who are ill as a result of the nuclear disaster. Despite it taking place more than 25 years ago, the area is still severely affected by the fallout contamination.

The children visiting the UK are all in remission from various cancers and the month long visit can have truly life-changing effects. Jeannette says: "The exposure to uncontaminated air, food and water on these trips can boost the children's immune system to the extent that they can be given an extra two years of life."

Peter says: "We were absolutely delighted to have the children and their host families here at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Chester.

"This is the second time we have invited the CCLL for a lunch, and we are thrilled that once again we could assist this wonderful charity in giving these brave children the best possible visit."

The lunch took place on the children's third week in the UK. So far they have visited Chester Zoo, been given a pack of clothes and other gifts from the Chester Lions, and visited local dentists and opticians, who kindly provided free treatment and glasses.

All activities the children take part in are generously donated and paid for by local businesses and people. Jeannette says: "We've had to pay for nothing since they've been here. All money raised goes towards air fares for the children.

"We could not be more grateful to Peter Hendry and the Doubletree by Hilton Chester and all the other local businesses for their kindness and generosity towards the children."

Fundraising events take place throughout the year to secure the money required to pay for the three-hour journey. For more information on the Chernobyl Children's Life Line, or to make a donation, please visit www.ccll.org.uk.
