A glamorous ball took place at the weekend at Chester Racecourse to raise funds in support of Help for Heroes and Cheshire’s own Mercian Regiment Benevolent Fund.

The latter is a charitable fund which exists to look after all members of the Regiment and their families but particularly those who have fallen on hard times.  Last year alone the Mercian Regiment suffered 12 soldiers killed in action and over 40 soldiers seriously wounded, 8 of them losing one or both legs as a result of roadside bombs.

The Benevolent Fund  is also ready to help the yet undiagnosed number of soldiers who are likely to face psychological injuries as a result of the intense combat that they have experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan.

His Honour Judge Elgan Edwards, Honorary Recorder of Chester thanked the sponsors and guests for the generosity, particularly Chester Racecourse.

The event was a great achievement raising £50,000 of much needed funds for the two charities.
