In our latest blog detailing the people behind some of Bury's best businesses, we're introducing Graham Evans, owner and head driver at GDT, a local driving school. Here, he discusses why he loves his job, what he does in his spare time and how long it actually took to pass his theory!

If you ever meet Graham Evans, you'll come to realise that he's the perfect person to learn to drive with. In a stressful environment as such, you want to be put at ease, and Graham, who has been a driving instructor for over eight years, is personable, friendly and always cracking jokes.

The love for his job beams through; when asked why, Graham responds with: "It's awesome."  Graham, aged 49, is a regular blogger and avid social media user; he promotes his business online, takes part in charity events and offers his pupils so much more than other driving schools.

Graham doesn't just teach his pupils how to drive but he builds relationships. Some, he says, become really good friends and he regularly keeps in contact with these through Facebook. He offers pupils everything they need to pass, proven in his pass rate!  From help with theory tests, an exclusive discount card and even a free Chinese meal when passing the practical, there are plenty of reasons to use GDT - all going the extra mile.

Graham, whose first car was a 1983 Ford Morris Marina in blue, has been shortlisted in the Made in Bury Business Awards 2015 for the Motoring and Transport category - beating competition from big dealerships and up against the likes of cartime.  He works six days a week and loves his job because he's “always meeting people and it's different every day.”

Now for the questions!

"What do you do in your spare time?"

“Spare time, what's that?!” He jokes.

"What one item would you take onto a desert island with you?"

“Twitter; it's short and sweet and great to communicate.... just don't tell the other half!”

"When has been the best time of your life?"

“Now. The kids have moved out, I'm settled and I have amazing grandkids."

"HOW long did it take for you to pass YOUR theory test?"

"More than once... BUT, that was only because it was a paper test. As soon as they moved it online I passed first time!" Seeing as Graham is so good at Twitter and Facebook, this doesn't surprise us!

With a friendly, chatty and professional driving instructor, we don't blame some students being sad to leave Graham and GDT behind as they make their own way on the road. But, it's good to know that this local business will always be there for its pupils, whilst continuing to offer an exceptional and dedicated service.

GDT, run by Graham, is a recommended Bury-based driving school. Click here for more information.
