Children learn about nature through Family Fun Days’ success

The summer holidays have begun and the Family Fun Days at Bryngarw Country Park, Brynmenyn, Bridgend are well under-way.

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Healthy Living Service have successfully held three Family Fun Days where over 100 children have taken part in a number of fun-filled activities including nature trails - following clues, answering questions and learning as they make their way around the park and scavenger hunts - identifying and collecting items from around the park such as leaves, wood and flowers.

Children also had the opportunity to get creative during a Native American themed day; building tepees, model canoes and making dream-catchers and the very popular willow-weaving workshops making butterflies and dragonflies.

Coming up over the next couple of weeks; children will have the chance to take part in shelter building, fire lighting demonstrations and make their own jewellery from natural materials that come straight from the parks natural surroundings. All of these activities are part of the bush craft themed day.

Dan Lock, Ranger at Bryngarw Country Park said: “With the sun shining the fun days have been very successful. They are a great way to keep the children entertained during the school holidays; enjoying the outdoors, keeping active and learning something new about their natural surroundings.

“These events are something for the whole family to enjoy and have a great day out at Bryngarw. The themes we have been focusing on have included the importance of sustainability and the environment, wildlife gardening and bushcraft workshops with many more still to come”.

Don’t forget the Family Fun Days take place every Wednesday until the 31 August from 11am – 3pm. Suitable for children aged seven to 11 and must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Admission £2 per child and car park £2.50.
