We used the Georgian house hotel as our base, for our weekend break with friends, the staff at our hotel where great, Louise and Chris where very helpful in surging places to visit, as we did not know the area. We decided on Blackpool, & Louise when to the trouble of getting us train times for use and taxi numbers for our return. Nothing was too much. Thank you for an enjoyable stay .

Chose this hotel for a three-night midweek break because it is both dog friendly and doesn't charge a ridiculous amount to accommodate them. The hotel actually plays host to guide dog training.

Public areas were modern, nicely furnished and we were able to take the pooch into the bar when no-one was eating (outside terrace all the time). We had a spacious family room (one king size bed, two singles side-by-side) on the ground floor, handily next to the car park. The leisure suite - pool and fitness rooms - was well equipped and spotless. My cousin and daughter swam twice a day.

We booked room only but paid in advance for 2-course dinners on the first evening and were able to choose from a daily set menu or have an allowance against the main menu. There was a separate, varied children's menu from which our nine-year-old had her favourite steak, chips and peas. This and my cousin's burger and fries were well liked but the lamb in my casserole was tough and the rosemary simply a fresh sprig on top rather than cooked in the sauce. It was served with two small, soft skinned baked potatoes but no contrasting veg to relieve the brown colour and texture.

Restaurant service was poor beyond belief - there was only one other table taken in the dining room and about a dozen people eating in the bar. Main courses took a while to come but when we'd waited over 30 minutes for two desserts - a cheese plate to share and an ice cream for the youngster - we decided not to bother. The server explained the delays on 'a lot of room service'. As we passed reception we were asked if we had enjoyed the meal and when we explained the missing desserts, ice cream was whisked to our room without problem.

Other than this, service was friendly and efficient and we very much enjoyed using the Mercure as a base.

We stayed here as a family of 4 in July. We booked it because it was loads cheaper than any other hotel in the area, including perceived budget brands such as premier inn and travelodge.

All in all, it was pleasent enough. It met my expectations in terms of cleanliness, room facilities etc. Staff were friendly, food was ok, nothing positive or negative to say about the food really. It has a nice health club attached, if that's your thing I would recommend it, especially the pool which was decent. Location wise, it's a stone throw away from the reebok stadium in Bolton, and it is an ideal location to stay if you are exploring the north west.

Overall, it was good, I have nothing negative to say about the place, it is what I would expect of a hotel of this nature, however, for the price I paid, it was exceptional value for money.

I stayed here for a friends wedding and thought it was lovely, the room was clean and spacious and nicely decorated, enjoyed a nice coffee in the morning a nice touch in the room.
Breakfast in the morning was delicious, fresh hot food was constantly being brought through.
My only slight grumble was the price of drinks in the bars during the evening £21 for a bottle of wine!

Check in was quick, friendly and efficient, restaurant was busy but service was quick and tables were quickly cleared.
Good choice of breakfast dishes, starters and hot food.
Bedroom and bathroom were clean and the room temperature was comfortable.
The area to the rear of the hotel can be noisy if there is a function on, e.g. wedding.

This clean, well run hotel proved to be a good choice for an overnight stay. The big plus point was the fact that all staff that we came into contact with, whether via e-mail or in person were friendly, welcoming, helpful, polite and considerate. Our room was fine, as was the standard of breakfast. The only disappointment, as in so many hotels, was the postage stamp sized duvets. It is not clear how a large person is expected to enjoy a comfortable nights sleep under one of these items. Overall though - many thanks to the people who work here, a good team.

Recently spent 1 night here over a weekend. We were very impressed with this hotel, the staff were friendly and efficient and the public areas were nicely presented.

We had a room on the second floor, and found it to be spacious, well appointed and spotlessly clean.

A special mention should go to the restaurant, we ate an evening meal and highly impressed with the quality of the food and brilliant service. The breakfast was also good, with a good selection available on the buffet.

We look forward to staying here again, hopefully very soon

Stayed here for 3 nights in September for a short break. This could be a good hotel but it was seriously let down by the staff. Many of the people we came into contact with (when you could find them) either lacked knowledge of the hotel or were not trained for hotel work. The quality of food in the restaurant saved our stay.

The problems started with reception. There is never anyone at the desk and there is no contact bell. The only option is to shout 'hello' and someone might appear from round the back. We were told we had a view of the hills but when we got to the room it had a view of a roof. (staff knowledge lacking here). They did swap us to another room straight away. In that room the safe was broken and we had to get someone to fix it. Reception staff did not give us ANY information, such as directions to the room or breakfast times etc

The room itself was good but the safe did not work and we found blood spots on the bathroom floor and room carpet. TV channels were not as listed on the screen. There was no info in the room about leisure centre arrangements.

We were not told that we had to take the room towels to the pool (we had to ask). We were promised extra towels but they never turned up.

The leisure centre reception was abysmal. There are some 50 lockers which need a padlock (free from reception) to secure them. When we asked for a lock we were told "they are all out". There was about 6 people in the pool! When we said what do we do the receptionist just shrugged her shoulders in a disinterested manner! After we stared at her for a while she offered a key for a miniature valuables locker. In addition' there was no toilet paper in one of the female toilets, water cooler did not work. Jacuzzi broken and apparently has been for some time. The pool itself was very good.

Staff training was an issue in the restaurant too. We had an excellent meal, so good that we decided to eat there again (via room service this time) on another night. Restaurant service was poor. There were 3 couples in a restaurant that could seat perhaps 100 or more people. We ordered wine and water. The waiter rushed by and plonked the wine on the table unceremoniously, said something like "your wine" and headed off. No offer to open it, check if it was the right one etc. OK it has a screw top, but it would be nice to have a bit of ceremony with the service. We had to call the waiter back then to ask for water glasses. The food however was excellent - my compliments to the chef. At breakfast, a special mention for excellent service to Lydia who was very attentive and friendly.

Don't expect to get back into your room if you go out! On the second day and third day the keycards stopped working. Reception just shrugged and said "they keep doing that". Perhaps the problem should be fixed?

I ordered coffee in the bar, the menu said served with handmade shortbread. We didn't get the biscuit. When I asked we were told that they hadn't had any for a while but the waitress said "but I've brought some in myself. She returned with chocolate digestives. A special mention here for Irene in the bar but what sort of management leaves the bar staff to provide things that the hotel should be doing.

It is a shame because the hotel has all the facilities but it needs the staff to be more knowledgeable and better trained. It was a bit reminiscent of Fawlty Towers unfortunately. Would I return, probably not.
