The roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China, and India, and was played over 2000 years ago. It is closely related to the old childrens game battledore and shuttlecock. The sport gained popularity in England and was first played in the town of Badminton, Gloucestershire, at the Duke of Beauforts country estate.
It was at this estate that the game was given its name – badminton.
Apparently the game as we know it, was invented on a rainy day in 1873 in the Great Hall at the Duke of Beaufort’s estate when a guest decided to put up a string in the middle of the hall, over which players had to hit the shuttlecock over to the opposing side.
Badminton became an official Olympic sport in Barcelona in 1992.
Please get your tickets early at https://www2.theticketfactory.com/yonex-badminton-championships/ and support our England team at Utilita Arena Birmingham, King Edwards Road, Birmingham B1 2AA.
