The Koala Who Could at Birmingham Rep is a dazzling, heartwarming production that wraps its audience—young and old—in a comforting embrace of laughter, music, and meaningful messages. Based on the beloved book by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, this adaptation is a masterclass in inclusive, imaginative theatre.

🎭 Captivating Performances
Darren Seed (Wombat / Storyteller #1) brings a grounded warmth and gentle humour that instantly connects with the audience. Sarah Palmer (Cassowary / Storyteller #2) radiates energy and charm, while Christopher Finn (Kevin / Storyteller #3) delivers a performance full of heart, vulnerability, and delightful comic timing. Hannah Miller, as Alternate, ensures the show’s spirit remains vibrant and seamless throughout.

👧🧒 Young Audiences Enchanted
From the moment the curtain rises, the theatre buzzes with excitement. Children lean forward in their seats, eyes wide, giggles bubbling up as Kevin clings to his tree and learns to embrace change. The rhyming narration, playful choreography, and expressive puppetry keep young minds utterly engaged. There’s a palpable sense of wonder in the room—gasps of delight, spontaneous laughter, and heartfelt cheers as Kevin takes his leap of faith. It’s clear this production speaks directly to its youngest viewers, empowering them with the message that trying something new can be truly wonderful.

🎨 Creative Brilliance
Emma Earle’s direction is both tender and dynamic, guiding the story with clarity and compassion. Eamonn O'Dwyer’s music and lyrics are catchy, emotive, and perfectly pitched for family audiences. Oli Townsend’s set and costume design is a visual feast, while Yvonne Stone’s puppetry direction (with Chuck Brown & Max Humphries of Unit 9 Puppet Workshop) adds a layer of enchantment that feels straight out of a dream.

💃 Movement, Light & Sound
Kloé Dean’s choreography infuses the show with rhythm and joy, and the technical artistry of James Whiteside (lighting) and Ella Wahlström (sound) creates an immersive, emotionally resonant atmosphere that enhances every moment.

🎟️ Production Excellence
Gareth Howells (Production Manager), Laura Rushton (Costume Supervisor), Phoebe Eldekvist (Company Stage Manager), and Hannah Miller (Assistant Stage Manager) ensure the production runs like clockwork, allowing the magic to shine through uninterrupted.

✨ Final Thoughts
The Koala Who Could is more than a show it’s an experience. It’s a celebration of bravery, friendship, and the joy of stepping outside your comfort zone. For the children in the audience, it’s a memory they’ll carry with them long after the final bow. For the adults, it’s a gentle reminder of the power of storytelling to uplift and inspire. A heartfelt bravo to the entire company for crafting a theatrical gem that truly sparkles.
