The Father is an intriguingly written play that constantly confounds expectations with thriller like turns twisting the narrative throughout. Simultaneously existential and introspective, this wonderfully peculiar and quietly stunning depiction of an aging man desperately trying to maintain his status in a world he increasingly finds difficult to understand and comprehend. The Father is an absorbing, distressing, and at times, bizarrely comical vision of a man struggling to trust his own mind, surrounded by people struggling to understand him (Oldbury Rep).
The Father, in this English translation by Christopher Hampton, was commissioned by the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath and premiered in October 2014. The production transferred to the Tricycle Theatre, London, in May 2015, and subsequently to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End. The Father was awarded the Moliere Award for Best Play and the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor. (Concord Theatricals)
