Brimming with charm, wit, and a pulsating 1980s soundtrack, Starter for Ten is a triumphant new musical that captures the awkward brilliance of growing up with both heart and hilarity.  From the moment the lights rise, the production wraps its audience in a warm wave of nostalgia, complete with synth-pop sparkle, university angst, and that eternal question: what matters more, knowledge or wisdom?

Set in 1985, the story follows earnest fresher Brian Jackson as he leaves Southend for Bristol University, armed with A-levels, a love of Kate Bush, and an unshakeable ambition to appear on University Challenge. What unfolds is a riotous and relatable coming-of-age tale, where quiz questions collide with romantic missteps, social awakenings, and the messy beauty of self-discovery.

The production values are second to none, with every element working in perfect harmony to transport audiences back to the vibrant world of 1980s student life. The original score by Hatty Carman and Tom Rasmussen is a standout, joyful, punchy, and perfectly pitched to capture the chaos and colour of the era. From anthemic ensemble numbers to tender solos, the music pulses with vitality and genuine emotion. It's no wonder the show earned a nomination for Best Musical Production at the UK Theatre Awards.

Charlie Parham's direction ensures the pacing remains sharp and the humour buoyant, whilst Alexzandra Sarmiento's choreography infuses every scene with energy and flair. Mel Giedroyc shines as Brian's mum, Irene, and delivers a hilariously deadpan turn as Julia Bland, blending warmth and comic precision in equal measure.  Amongst the exceptional cast, standout performances come from Adam Bregman as Brian and Will Jennings as Patrick, both bringing depth and authenticity to their roles.

What makes Starter for Ten truly special is its ability to balance laugh-out-loud comedy with heartfelt sincerity. It's a show that doesn't just entertain, it connects. Whether you lived through the 1980s or are discovering it for the first time, you'll find something to love in this clever, big-hearted celebration of ambition, belonging, and the bittersweet beauty of growing up.

Whether you're a devoted fan of musicals or not, Starter for Ten will have you joining the well-deserved standing ovation and cheering just as loudly as everyone else.  This is hands down one of the best productions I have seen in recent years. Well done to all involved. Starter for Ten is a feel-good triumph, a smart, joyous musical that leaves you grinning long after the final buzzer. Don't miss it.
