Sport Birmingham has strengthened its board of trustees with the appointment of two new members, Claire Murray and Kate Oliver.

Claire Murray, head of strategic content & campaigns at British Gymnastics, brings substantial experience in strategic marketing and brand development.

With her professional expertise and long-standing connection to Birmingham, Claire is eager to help elevate Sport Birmingham’s profile and extend its reach.

She said: “Having previously lived and worked in Birmingham, and more recently working in sport with British Gymnastics, I was excited about the opportunity to use my knowledge, passion and marketing expertise to help raise the profile of the important work Sport Birmingham does and the many opportunities it offers, particularly for those most in need.

“I’m excited about the organisation’s ambition and what’s next, and how I can play my part in supporting a more active Birmingham.”

Kate Oliver, from HCR Law, is a specialist in sports law and safeguarding.

Kate’s professional background makes her a valuable addition to Sport Birmingham’s mission of ensuring sport and physical activity remain accessible and safe for all.

Her appointment underlines the organisation’s continued commitment to governance, safeguarding, and best practice across the sector.

Alongside these appointments, Sport Birmingham is recognising the service of three trustees stepping down: Keith Fraser, Shah Begum, and James McLaughlin.

Keith Fraser, chair of the Youth Justice Board for England & Wales, brought insight into how sport can be a transformative tool for youth engagement and intervention.

Shah Begum, who chaired the internal Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, guided the organisation in highlighting its impact through her legal expertise and role with the United by 2022 Charity.

James McLaughlin, CEO of Cure Leukaemia, led the Commercial Working Group, using his extensive business acumen to support growth and innovation.

Mike Chamberlain, CEO of Sport Birmingham, said: “It’s always exciting to welcome new trustees, and Claire and Kate both bring essential skills and experience as well as a passion for and belief in the difference that sport and physical activity makes to people’s lives.

“Although we say a huge thank you and goodbye to Keith, Shah and James, we acknowledge their commitment and look forward to an ongoing relationship with them all.”
