Analysis of questions asked during a parents and supporters webinar hosted by Aston University shows families are more concerned about what happens after results arrive than the grades themselves.

Questions asked at the Q&A session on 7 August suggests that many families are less concerned about grades alone.

Instead, they are more focused on navigating the admissions process, accommodation, finances and ensuring they do not make mistakes that could affect their child's future.

Queries raised during the event centred on whether universities can show flexibility when students narrowly miss entry requirements, how clearing works, what happens once offer conditions have been met and what practical steps students need to take before starting university.

As A-level students prepare to receive their results today, the Aston University webinar highlighted five key concerns among parents:

Understanding admissions decisions

Families wanted reassurance that universities consider individual circumstances and asked whether students who narrowly miss their grades could still be considered for a place through clearing.

Parents also sought clarification on how qualifications are assessed and whether additional achievements could support admissions decisions.

What happens after results arrive

One of the most common themes was uncertainty about the process once a student achieves the grades needed for their offer.

Many parents wanted simple answers to practical questions, including whether they need to contact the university, how confirmation works through UCAS and when information about the next steps will arrive.

Accommodation and student wellbeing

Questions also focused heavily on accommodation, including affordability, support available for students, dietary requirements in shared living spaces and how students connect with future flatmates before arriving on campus.

The discussion suggested many families are already thinking beyond admissions and beginning to focus on the day-to-day realities of university life.

Financial support

The cost of living remains a significant concern, with parents asking about scholarships, student finance and support available to help students manage accommodation and living costs.

Making the right choice

Perhaps the strongest theme emerging from the session was a fear of making the wrong decision.

Families wanted reassurance about clearing, alternative course options and whether opportunities would still be available if students changed their minds after receiving their results.

Louise Foster-Agg, director of admissions at Aston University, said: “Results Day can feel overwhelming for students and parents alike, but one of the key messages we want families to hear is that there are often more options available than they realise.

“Many parents worry about whether their child has done everything correctly, whether they may have missed a crucial step, or what happens if results are slightly different from what they expected. These are completely understandable concerns.

“The important thing is not to panic and not to rush decisions. Take time to understand the options available and seek advice before making choices that could affect future opportunities."
