Created by artists Rich O'Gorman and Rosie Clark, the large-scale works transform the iconic Canalside into a vibrant outdoor destination, celebrating creativity, community and the simple joy of spending time together.

For Rich O'Gorman, better known as House Homo, Beam marks a significant milestone as his largest public commission.

The project builds on the success of his large-scale light installation Where the Trees Begin created for Edgbaston Village as part of Birmingham Light Festival, continuing his distinctive use of bold colour, playful geometry and uplifting visual storytelling.

Spanning across two levels at Mailbox, Beam is inspired by the site's history as Birmingham's former Sorting Office, its waterside setting and its role as a place where people come together.

Alongside Beam sits Whenever You're Ready by Rosie Clark, a warm invitation to slow down and enjoy the space.

Usually preceded by the words ‘take your time’, the title captures the welcoming atmosphere of the canalside, encouraging visitors to explore without urgency and reminding us that some of the best moments happen when nothing is rushed.

Running until 31 August, Summer of Colour’s free programme also includes a season of big-screen sporting moments, beginning with Wimbledon.

Mark Broadhead, acting estate director at Mailbox said: “We believe in the transformative power of effective placemaking to create meaningful spaces where communities can connect and dwell.

“Summer of Colour does just that - transforming how we experience our urban environment, aligning with Mailbox's commitment to create experiences that bring its community together.”

Rebecca Phillips, senior producer at OPUS, said: “Public art has a wonderful way of changing how we experience familiar places.

“Rich and Rosie's commissions each have their own distinct personality, but together they bring a radiant warmth to Canalside.

“Both pieces encourage you to experience and connect to your surroundings in a new way - that's exactly what great public art should do."

The commissions form part of a wider programme of events taking place at Mailbox throughout the summer.
