A new book featuring poems and photographs of Birmingham has been endorsed by the Birmingham Chinatown Business Association.
Double Act is a book full of the poems by Birmingham soliciytor Ian Henery and photographer David Moore that was launched during a 48 hour spoken word event recently in Redditch. Work from the collaboration was exhibited in Birmingham Central Library as part of The Grid Project - In Search Of Urban Happiness
"This book is a celebration of Birmingham’s rich history, its vibrant communities, and the enduring spirit of its people." said Dr Dorian Chan, Secretary General of the Birmingham Chinatown Business Association. "Through the lens of two talented writers, David Moore and Ian Henery, we are invited to explore the city’s landmarks, districts, and cultural nodes, each brought to life with vivid imagery and heartfelt emotion."
Birmingham is a city of contrasts and connections—a place where the past and present coexist, where industrial heritage meets modern innovation, and where diverse communities come together to create a tapestry of shared experiences.
"This book captures that essence beautifully, weaving together stories of resilience, transformation, and hope. From the social housing ideals of Short Heath to the iconic Spaghetti Junction, from the historic Moseley Road to the bustling Bullring, the authors take us on a journey that is both deeply personal and universally resonant." said Dr Dorian Chan.
"As someone who has witnessed the dynamism of Birmingham’s Chinatown and its role in shaping the city’s identity, I am particularly moved by the themes of inclusion and diversity that run through this work. The poems and essays remind us of the importance of community, the power of cultural heritage, and the need to honour the contributions of all who call Birmingham home."
This book is not just a tribute to Birmingham’s landmarks and history; it is a call to reflect on the values that unite us and the dreams that inspire us. It is a testament to the creativity and passion of its authors, and a gift to all who cherish the spirit of this great city.
"I commend David Moore and Ian Henery for their outstanding work and invite readers to immerse themselves in the pages that follow. May this book inspire you to see Birmingham—and the world around you—with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of wonder." said Dr Dorian Chan.
