When thousands of runners take to the streets for the Great Birmingham Run on 3rd May, a passionate team supporting FareShare Midlands will be running with one goal: to fight hunger across the region.

Nearly 40 runners, made up of supporters, partners and local businesses, will take on the 10K and Half Marathon to raise vital funds and awareness for the Midlands’ largest food redistribution charity. Every mile completed will help provide meals for people facing food insecurity.

FareShare Midlands rescues good-to-eat surplus food and redistributes it to more than 650 charities and community groups, reaching around 60,000 people every week. From food pantries to schools, this food is transformed into meals, support and opportunity for those who need it most.

Simone Connolly, CEO of FareShare Midlands, said:

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone taking part. Taking on a 10K or Half Marathon is no small feat, but the impact will be felt far beyond race day. Every pound raised helps us get more food to people who need it most in our communities.”

A major force behind this year’s team is VolkerFitzpatrick, whose support has helped dozens of runners take part. Their team recently volunteered with FareShare Midlands, seeing firsthand the scale of need and the difference surplus food can make.

Abigail Cattanach- Elsden, Stakeholder and Social Value Manager of VolkerFitzpatrick said:

“Seeing the impact of FareShare Midlands up close was incredibly powerful. The scale of their work and the difference it makes to families and communities is inspiring. Supporting the Great Birmingham Run is our way of backing a charity that turns surplus food into real opportunity.”

Ed Cox, CEO of the West Midlands Combined Authority, said:

“I’m delighted that a team of us from West Midlands Combined Authority are running to support FareShare Midlands. The work FareShare does to rescue and recycle surplus food is completely aligned to the work we are doing to support the circular economy and achieve the mayor’s priority that this region should work for everyone. Every penny we raise will go to FareShare Midlands to make sure that local residents receive vital support.”

Together, runners from across the region’s business community are showing how collective action can tackle both food waste and hunger. As crowds line Birmingham’s streets, each step taken by the FareShare Midlands team will represent something bigger than a race, a commitment to building stronger, healthier communities.
