The food redistribution charity has highlighted that as temperatures fall and household budgets remain under pressure, many families will once again face difficult choices between heating their homes, paying essential bills and putting food on the table.

Every year, the organisation rescues thousands of tonnes of good, nutritious surplus food from supermarkets, farms and food suppliers, redistributing it to frontline charities and community organisations supporting families, children and older people across the region.

But this vital work depends on volunteers – and with winter approaching, the charity urgently needs more people to lend a hand.

From driving delivery vans and preparing food orders to sorting, picking and packing produce in the warehouse, volunteers play an essential role in keeping food moving.

Opportunities are also available to support administration and logistics, as well as kitchen activities where available.

Simone Connolly, CEO of FareShare Midlands, said: “We simply couldn't do what we do without our incredible volunteers, and I cannot thank them enough.

“Every tray picked, every order prepared and every van loaded helps get good food to charities supporting people in our communities.

“But we urgently need more helping hands. As winter approaches and families continue to struggle with the cost of living, we want to make sure we can keep getting as much food as possible to the communities that rely on us.

“Volunteering benefits everyone. It's a chance to meet people, learn new skills, stay active and be part of something worthwhile.

“You don't need specialist experience, just a willingness to get involved. Whether you can spare a few hours or volunteer regularly, we'd love to welcome you. Every hour really does make a difference.”
