Delivered through the charity's SkillsShare employability programme, Cook and Connect will provide participants with practical kitchen experience, industry-relevant training and dedicated employment support, helping them build the skills and confidence needed to secure sustainable employment.

Based at FareShare Midlands' Sir Peter Rigby Coronation Food Hub in Birmingham, the programme will make use of the Hub's state-of-the-art community kitchens, giving participants the opportunity to train in a professional environment under the guidance of experienced chefs.

The six-week course will cover essential culinary skills, food preparation, kitchen hygiene, teamwork and communication. Participants will also learn how to transform surplus food into nutritious, delicious meals, combining practical cooking experience with an understanding of food waste and sustainability.

Participants will work towards a Food Safety and Hygiene Certificate and receive personalised support from a dedicated Employability Coach, including CV writing, interview preparation and guidance on finding employment.

Paul Akroyd, Head of Employability at FareShare Midlands, said:

"Cook and Connect is about much more than learning to cook. It's about giving people the practical skills, qualifications and confidence they need to take that next step into employment.

"We know that finding work can be challenging, particularly for people facing additional barriers. By combining hands-on experience in a professional kitchen with personalised employability support, we want to help participants build a strong foundation for a successful and sustainable career in hospitality."

Ellen Rafiqi, Head Chef at FareShare Midlands, added:

"We're ready and raring to go! We've put together a strong programme that will give participants a real insight into working in hospitality, with plenty of practical experience and support along the way.

"Whether someone already enjoys cooking at home or is completely new to the kitchen, we'll help them develop the professional skills, teamwork and confidence they'll need to succeed in the sector."

Cook and Connect is the latest addition to FareShare Midlands' SkillsShare programme, which has already supported more than 2,000 people on their journey towards employment, through training, practical work experience and tailored support.

The new programme will create further opportunities for Birmingham residents to overcome barriers to employment, develop valuable skills and take positive steps towards long-term work.

Cook and Connect is open to Birmingham residents aged 18 and over.
