EHSC supports organisations across the UK and internationally with practical health and safety consultancy, training and ongoing competent-person support.

Its services include audits and inspections, risk assessments, policies and procedures, construction and CDM support, accident investigation and health and safety training.

Based at Deethe Farm in Woburn Sands, Milton Keynes, the business combines more than three decades of experience with an ongoing investment in technology and systems designed to make health and safety simpler and more accessible for its clients.

The business was founded on 9 September 1991 by Paul Winter and Margeret West. In 1993, Paul Winter was awarded an MBE for services to occupational health and safety. He passed away in 2021.

Paul’s daughter Becki Staincliffe (pictured), who joined the family business in 2000, is now the managing director of the firm.

Beckie said: “When my mum and dad started EHSC, none of us could have imagined what workplaces would look like 35 years later.

“Some things that were normal then sound strange now. People smoked in offices, reports were typed up (using a typewriter) and posted or faxed, and a mobile phone wasn’t something everyone carried around.

“But the bigger change is that health and safety is no longer just seen as paperwork. It is tied into how people lead, how teams work, and how employers look after people properly.

“We’re incredibly proud of where EHSC has come from and of the foundations my parents created. Dad knew health and safety inside out, but he never made people feel talked down to. He wanted people to leave with advice they understood and could actually use, and that is still very much how we want EHSC to work today.  Often becoming lifelong friends with clients along the way.

“We want to hold on to what works while continuing to improve. Health and safety keeps changing and, after 35 years, changing with it is part of what we do, but with the core family values and ethos at the heart of all what we do.”

Across the 35 years, EHSC has also worked through significant changes in workplace health and safety, including the introduction and development of legislation covering manual handling, display screen equipment, PPE, work equipment, construction and CDM, work at height, noise, smoke-free workplaces and corporate manslaughter.

More recently, the focus has expanded to include occupational health, mental health, work-related stress, workplace culture and emerging technology.

In January, the firm moved to their new premises at Deethe Farm in Woburn Sands, Milton Keynes.
