Hundreds of young people in Ladywood benefitted from a free summer sports programme, launched by Berkeley St Joseph and the Aston Villa Foundation.

The six-week programme, which ran every Monday till 18 August at Gilby Road Park, offered structured sports and activity sessions for eight to 14-year-olds.

Delivered by trained Foundation coaches, the initiative was designed to keep children active over the school holidays while building confidence and local connections.

The initiative is the latest example of the Aston Villa Foundation’s work across Birmingham, with a long-standing presence in Ladywood.

The programme supports the charity’s mission of ‘Working Together to Enrich Lives’, particularly in areas where opportunities for subsidised summer activities is limited.

James Lowbridge, senior programmes manager at Aston Villa Foundation, said: “Ladywood is a vibrant, diverse community, and we wanted to give local young people the opportunity to stay active and connect with others over the summer holidays.

“This six-week programme reflects our wider commitment to being a positive presence in areas of Birmingham that need it most."

Berkeley St Joseph, the recently appointed development partner for the regeneration of the Ladywood estate, has partnered with Midlands-based charities for over a decade.

Focusing on supporting children and young people, the housebuilder is committed to investing in projects that equip communities with the tools and resources they need to thrive.

William Rimell, development director at Berkeley St Joseph, added: “We’re proud to partner with the Aston Villa Foundation to support this summer programme of sport in Ladywood.

“As a local partner in the area’s regeneration, we are keen to support sport, wellness and other activities for young people in Ladywood.

“This initiative offers an excellent opportunity for local children to stay active, develop new skills, and connect with others in a supportive environment.”
