This recognises the rich cultures, histories and contributions of South Asian communities to Birmingham's diverse and vibrant identity.

Running annually from 18 July to 17 August, South Asian Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, experiences and heritage of people with roots in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

As one of the UK's most diverse cities, Birmingham is home to thriving South Asian communities that have helped shape the city's social, cultural and economic life for generations.

Throughout the month, residents will have the opportunity to take part in a range of events, activities and celebrations taking place across Birmingham.

The programme includes community-led events, cultural performances, exhibitions, workshops and opportunities to learn more about the stories, experiences and achievements of South Asian residents past and present.

Councillor Deborah Harries, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: "South Asian Heritage Month is an important opportunity to celebrate the incredible contribution South Asian communities have made, and continue to make, to Birmingham.

"Our city's diversity is one of its greatest strengths, and this month gives us a chance to recognise the rich cultural heritage, traditions and achievements that have helped shape Birmingham into the vibrant city it is today.

"I encourage residents to take part in the wide range of events taking place across the city and to learn more about the stories, cultures and experiences that are such an important part of Birmingham's identity."

Birmingham City Council is encouraging residents to explore events being organised by community groups, cultural organisations and partners across the city throughout the month.
