On Sunday 28th September the Arts Council England funded The Moon Lantern Players performed in two sold out shows for the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival in Birmingham. Each show sold out 750 tickets making a combined sold out double performance at the Birmingham Conference & Events Centre of 1,500 people.
The Chinese Creation Story is a profound source of inspiration, reflecting themes of resilience, unity and the significance of cultural heritage. The emergence of the Yellow Dragon signifies hope and restoration after chaos, illustrating the power of transformation.
The divine figures Huaxu, Fuxi and Nu Wa represent creativity and nurturing, illustrating the significance of family and community in shaping our world. Their journey of shaping humanity from clay emphasis our shared origins and the beauty of diveristy within our common heritage.
This performance took place at the Mid Autumn Chinatown Festival in Birmingham, along with an exclusive show at Ming Moon`s buffet bar in the heart of Chinatown. The day was filled with energy, storytelling and a sense of unity.
Engaging with Chinese communities opens a door to a rich tapestry of traditions, stories and wisdom. There is so much to learn and draw inspiration from - especially in how these tales celebrate our interconnectedness. Embracing these narratives can enrich our lives and encourage us to honour the diverse stories that contribute to our global community.
I am deeply grateful to my fellow Dyslexic Ian Henery for crafting this piece and allowing me to contribute to the project. Reconnecting with Dr Ranjit Khutan, whom I first met during the formative stage at my arts career at Sampad. Evaluating his first play "In The kitchen" was instrumental in launching my creative journey. It was a true honour to return to this vibrant energy and I look forward to many more opportunities ahead.
I had the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented cast, including Irene Henery, Bill Heeks, Susan Vickers, Chi Lam, Sundri Maheswaran, Luke Dalton and Aime J Lilac. Also, I would like to extend my thanks to the arts team Diyodi Devina Menon and Sarah Jane Pugh.
