At Hales Valley Trust, and exemplified through the practice at Lutley Primary School, technology is not an addition to teaching—it is a strategic, embedded driver of educational excellence, staff development, and pupil empowerment.

Under the leadership of Headteacher Alex Hall, Lutley Primary has become a model of how a clear digital vision, combined with strong implementation and collaborative leadership, can transform teaching and learning. This work sits within a Trust-wide digital strategy, developed and led centrally, ensuring consistency, scalability, and sustained impact across all schools.

A Strategic and Collaborative Approach

The Trust’s digital strategy provides a clear and ambitious framework aligned to national standards, ensuring that technology supports high-quality teaching, inclusion, safeguarding, and operational efficiency across all seven schools. This strategy is not static; it is actively shaped through collaboration between school leaders, IT services, and Estates teams, ensuring infrastructure and pedagogy evolve together.

At Lutley, this strategic vision is brought to life through distributed leadership, in that Alex Hall leads key groups across the Trust to embed our priorities e.g. Senior Digital Leads across the Trust. School-based Online Safety Leaders. A highly effective Digi Leader pupil programme. This multi-layered model ensures that innovation is both strategically driven and locally owned.

Transforming Teaching and Learning

At Lutley Primary, digital technology is seamlessly integrated into everyday classroom practice. The use of Chromebooks and cloud-based platforms enables pupils to access learning in dynamic, collaborative, and personalised ways.

Teachers demonstrate consistently strong, pedagogy-led use of technology, using digital tools to:

  • Enhance engagement and deepen understanding.
  • Promote independent and enquiry-based learning.
  • Enable real-time collaboration and feedback.
  • Support inclusive practice for all learners.

Crucially, technology is never used for its own sake. Its impact is measured in improved engagement, confidence, and learning behaviours across the curriculum. Excellence in Professional Development: IRIS Connect A defining strength of Lutley’s approach is its commitment to high-quality teaching through continuous professional development.

The school utilises IRIS Connect as a powerful tool for:

  • Instructional coaching.
  • Self-reflection and professional dialogue.
  • Improving consistency and quality of teaching practice.

This enables staff to engage in evidence-informed reflection, collaborate effectively, and continuously refine their practice. The integration of IRIS Connect ensures that technology enhances not only pupil outcomes, but also teacher effectiveness—creating a culture of ongoing improvement.

Pupil Leadership and Digital Culture

One of the most distinctive and impactful elements of the Trust’s approach is its commitment to pupil voice. At Lutley Primary: Every class is represented by Digi Leaders. Pupils actively contribute to technology use, online safety, and digital learning design. Digi Leaders meet regularly to share insights and shape provision. Pupils lead assemblies and awareness campaigns. This ensures that technology is not something done to pupils, but something developed with them.

It builds confidence, responsibility, and digital citizenship across the school.

Excellence in Online Safety and Community Engagement

The school has established a mature and proactive approach to online safety, led by both staff and pupils. Through its Online Safety Leaders group and Trust-wide collaboration: Emerging risks are identified and addressed early. Policies are informed by real pupil experiences including our new AI policy.

Parents and the community are engaged in supporting safe use across all seven of our schools guided by the defined monthly plans from the Senior Digital leads. This integrated model ensures that safeguarding remains at the heart of all digital innovation.

Impact and Outcomes

The impact of this work is clear and sustained: Technology is embedded as a normal and effective part of daily learning. Pupils demonstrate increased independence, engagement, and digital confidence. Teaching quality is enhanced through reflective practice and coaching - leading to excellent outcomes. Staff collaborate more effectively across schools and the Trust. Pupils play an active role in shaping digital practice and culture.

Most importantly, technology has become a tool for equity—ensuring all pupils can access, engage with, and succeed in their learning. A Model for the Future Hales Valley Trust, through schools such as Lutley Primary, demonstrates that successful digital transformation is not about devices—it is about vision, leadership, culture, and impact. This is a scalable, sustainable model of excellence where: Strategy drives practice. Staff are empowered through professional learning. Pupils lead and shape digital innovation. Technology measurably improves outcomes. This work represents a fully embedded, Trust-wide digital ecosystem—one that not only enhances teaching and learning today but prepares pupils for the demands of tomorrow.
