Award-winning choreographer and dancer, Dada Masilois set to perform her new contemporary dance work, The Sacrifice, at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 March, as part of the production’s UK premiere.

Following the stunning reimagining of Giselle in 2019, Dada Masilo and her company of dancers are returning to the UK with The Sacrifice.

Featuring an original score performed live on stage, Masilo’s work is inspired by Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, combining European heritage with uniquely rhythmic and expressive movements of ‘Tswana’ the traditional dance of Botswana.

An all-South African company of dancers and musicians deliver an emotive performance, which is rooted in story-telling and healing ritual.

Speaking of her inspiration behind The Sacrifice Dada Masilo says: “The idea came about as I wanted to do a fusion of contemporary dance and Tswana dance, which is from my heritage.

“I spent a month with our Tswana dance teacher as none of us had ever done this type of dance before. The movement is very rhythmical and has very complex rhythms, which was hard to learn, but our teacher was amazing. We can’t wait to share it with our UK audiences.”

Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice is at Birmingham Hippodrome on Tuesday 28 March and Wednesday 29 March. There is a complimentary post-show Q&A on Tuesday 28 March.

Tickets can be booked online at birminghamhippodrome.com or by calling the box office on 0844 338 5000*
