The Baton of Hope is the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative, bringing together communities, organisations and individuals to raise awareness, challenge stigma and encourage more open conversations about suicide.

The Baton previously came to Birmingham in 2023 and will be returning to the city next year as part of the 2027 tour, which takes in 21 locations across the UK in the space of 40 days.

Applications are now open for baton bearers, giving people the chance to play a personal role in carrying the Baton through the streets of Birmingham, and helping to share a message of hope, remembrance and support.

Applications are open until 31 January 2027 and people aged 16 and over who have been affected by suicide in any way are encouraged to apply. This could be in memory of someone they’ve lost, to reflect on their own experiences of suicide, in or because they believe every life is worth fighting for.

Cllr Nosheen Khalid, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Birmingham City Council, said:

“We’re incredibly proud that Birmingham has been chosen to host the Baton of Hope again in September 2027 and we’re now encouraging people from across the city to put themselves forward to be baton bearers.

“We know suicide affects families, friends, workplaces and communities across Birmingham. By taking part, Baton Bearers can help create conversations that save lives and remind people that support is available, and nobody should face difficult times alone.

“I encourage anyone who feels a connection to the Baton of Hope’s message to apply and be part of what promises to be a memorable and important day for our city.”

Applications to become a Baton Bearer can be made on the Baton of Hope website.

Further details about Birmingham’s route, activities and opportunities for organisations and communities to get involved will be announced nearer the event.
