I won a competition on Facebook for a full taster menu, wine pairing & cheese board for two at the Base Restaurant in Ulverston. I took my husband and we had the most amazing time. The food was just beautiful, both the taste and the presentation was outstanding. The fact everyone is seated at the same time and the food is served at the same time means there is a great atmosphere and ambiance in the restaurant . The waitresses were knowledgeable and the quality of service and attention to detail was superb. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone that wants to experience a night to remember. I am already planning on going again in a few weeks time. One of the best places in Ulverston to eat. Thanks again to the Base restaurant.

This is sold as a fine dining experience, with a 6 course tasting menu and optional wine pairing. The restaurant and ambiance is really nice, with an interesting location in the park. The service is decent and doesn't feel rushed.
However, it feels a bit like they are "playing at" fine dining, rather than delivering it. Having eaten at several fine dining places in the area (with and without michelin stars) we have a good idea of what makes a great meal. Unfortunately Base falls short in several areas. The lamb and reduction were excellent, but then the fish was rubbery and filled with bones. It was the same story throughout, one good element next to one poor one. It did feel as though there was good potential there, but they aren't at the level of their peers yet.

This was return visit but this time we chose the tasting lunch menu time. The food was divine, very tasty and well presented. Loved all the variety of crockery used - very dramatic. All the dishes were tasty and the flavours went ell together. As I said, this was a return visit and last time, we went for the evening tasting menu. If I am honest, I would return but would go back to the evening meal time. As the cafe is in the middle of a park, in daytime, this meant lots and lots of distractions. These distractions included lots and lots of folks coming into the building to use the loo, folks wanting to buy ice creams or ordering food at the courtyard tables outside which the same waiting staff had to take orders and deliver food, serve ices. This made it feel less like an exclusive lunch - more a meal in the middle of a busy cafe. There were lots of walkers going past and staring into the restaurant before sitting at the tables in the courtyard that were distracting - especially when a noisy spaniel arrived and would not stop barking at people. Sadly, this did influence our appreciation of the food as your eyes were constantly distracted by other activities including seeing the head chef going outside for a vape. But, the food was excellent and we will definitely return but it will be in the evening with hopefully less distractions.
