The long summer holiday is almost over, and all exam results are in. So, for young people aged 16 to 19 It’s almost time to start or return to sixth form, attend college, or begin an apprenticeship.

It’s an expensive time of the year with the cost of clothing, footwear, food, and stationary to consider. Travel costs can also pose a problem too. The cost of getting to College, School or a place of work for an apprenticeship can sometimes be a barrier to those starting or returning to education and training.

Well, help is at hand with the launch of Westmorland and Furness Council’s new scheme – the 16 to 19 Education Travel Bursary Fund.

It helps provide financial support to students and apprentices with the cost of transport so they can remain in education and training.

The grant is open to all students who live in Westmorland and Furness and have to pay for transport. For students who car share, the driver can apply for the scheme. Please be aware that car share passengers will not be eligible for a bursary.

The bursary fund works on a sliding scale, dependant on how far you live away from your school, college or apprenticeship and students who travel by bicycle will be able to claim a one-off grant, irrespective of how far they travel.

You can apply for the travel bursary here.

The Closing date for all applications is 12pm on the 20th October 2023 and applications will be processed on a 'first come, first served' basis.
