A really fantastic experience. Mark and his team have created a lovely experience, a single tasting menu experience in a small restaurant with an open kitchen where you can enjoy each dish while watching them carefully create the next. The pace of the meal was beautifully executed to leave you comfortably full and there was a nice selection of wines to accompany the dishes. There were some really stand out dishes, the smoked duck and Mojito dishes in particular but what makes this restaurant special is that the menu is different every week showing a real passion and creativity from the chefs. Local sourcing sits at the heart of the menu with fish and meat from the surrounding area. This restaurant hasn’t been open long but I think you should book soon because this is a restaurant that is really going places and soon it will be hard to get in!

Absolutely amazed with the food here, food was of an unbelievably high quality with each course bringing different cuisines and flavours. We went on one of the nights where there was a set menu and it was delicious, vegetarian and non vegetarian meals. The staff were really friendly and chatted to us at the end, and even let us practice the display of sorbet! Would very much recommend.

We dinned her for our wedding anniversary and what a treat it was. We’ve recently moved for a city and we were pleasantly surprised to have such good quality food so close to our house. The dishes are all uniquely created and changed regularly so no too nights are the same. We can really recommend this dining experience and will look forward to booking in the future

We visited with friends at the weekend and were bowled over by the quality of food. The venison was the best I’ve ever had!
You can see all the dishes being prepared as the unique tasting menu calmly unfolds in the open kitchen.Slick service from friendly staff who present and describe each course - and very reasonably priced.
The people of Ulverston are so lucky to have such fine dining on their doorstep.

Third visit in 6 weeks says it all. Top quality local ingredients cleverly crafted into great dishes. Great service & timing give a calm and satisfying dining experience enhanced by the fact that you can see the chefs calmly creating the next course. A brilliant addition to Ulverston.

It’s not often we have the luxury of a child free night, and it was almost scuppered by our sleepover night being changed, but luckily we managed to sort it! I’m so glad we did as the evening was fabulous!
The tastes from each course were Devine! Beautifully presented in a very relaxed atmosphere. The set up was very professional and there wasn’t anything too much trouble for the waitresses who did an outstanding job. It was great watching Mark and his right hand man setting up each dish in front of us.
The evening was finished off nicely when Mark visited each table where we could comment (very positively) on the evening. Many thanks 😊

Don't even think twice, book a table! Food was absolutely fantastic and rivals that of many a Michelin Starred restaurant. Atmosphere relaxed and friendly. We couldn't fault a thing. The waitress Abbey was also fantastic. Thank you!!

Originally popped in for a coffee after a walk up Hoad Hill but the menu looked so appealing that we ordered some small plates to share. The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonably price and the staff were incredibly attentive and pleasant. The ice creams to follow were also lovely! Will definitely go back when we’re in the area again!

No doubt that Mark Satterthwaite is a great chef. The menu was well balanced and the food was delicious. In particular, the pork was spectacular. I am not usually a fan of mash, but could be converted if it was always this good. Special mention also of the hen of the woods arancini - stunning.
What lets the Base down is the venue, as it is a bit lacking in atmosphere and not helped by the front of house staff, one of whom openly chewed gum throughout the evening. The staff could do with more training, particularly in welcoming guests, and announcing what each course was.For that reason I have rated the Base as very good, instead of excellent (which the food certainly was.)

Amazing food in a great setting. Each course was a pleasure to eat. Not only did it look amazing it tasted amazing too. This ‘scratch kitchen’ is a must for those who enjoy a food experience. Set in a relaxed, none stuffy environment in the market town of Ulverston, the location is perfect. Chef has done a great job, with his team of creating something a bit different in this area of town. Watching the theatre of a kitchen was an added bonus with an open plan layout and with the pass positioned right next to the dining area was fun. A lovely court yard to enjoy a pre meal drink or to retire to after the event is a lovely bonus. All ingredients are locally sourced, with some coming from just steps away. A creative menu which changes weekly keeps you wanting to return. The ‘one service’ set up was great. Everyone eating the same course at the same time. Chef can cater for all dietary needs because everything is cooked from ‘scratch’ so he knows exactly what is in each dish. To offer a suggestion, it would be nice if Chef could announce the dish once served. I had to keep getting the menu up on my phone to remember what I was eating. A lovely evening eating very nice food. I will be back, that’s for sure. Thank you to the lovely staff also.

This is the second time we have visited for the evening Fixed Menu and once again, we did not leave disappointed.
The food was amazing and Mark was brilliant, checking for allergies and making sure I had access to the Veggie menu when asked for it when we booked.
When we arrived 1830, we were seated quickly and in full view of the open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked and what's happening behind the scenes - it's very theatrical, unique and good fun for the diner!
The drinks menu features a vast array of local beers and spirits plus a good selection of softs for those who prefer something nin-alcoholic. We ordered our drinks and they arrived quickly by the same lovely Waitress who served us last time we visited.
It was a lovely atmosphere as we sat waiting for 'the show' to begin.
At 1900(ish) Mark and Team begin to prepare the first dish of the Fixed Menu. It's really interesting to watch all the hard work and accuracy that goes into the dishes they make and so the night begins...
We happily chatted between ourselves, while watching Mark and his Team cook. The Waitresses were lovely and very attentive - nothing was too much trouble.
The food was amazing, creative and just so tasty!
This time we visited, Base had produced a Cheese and Biscuits Menu where you could also choose from a selection of Port and Dessert Wines that you could order as an extra with your coffees. We were too stuffed from the meal but some tables around us ordered and that looked delicious.
We left full, happy and incredibly relaxed after a very enjoyable evening.
As always a fantastic experience and once again, thanks Mark and Team for a brilliant night!!
We highly recommend a visit - you will not be disappointed!

Very pleased to have found this restaurant for a Friday night dinner. It operates with a single service and a set menu (but they were happy to provide me a vegetarian alternative to the meat and fish dishes - my partner had the regular menu, hence the steak in the photo).
The open kitchen meant we could see the final stages of cooking and serving, which added an extra level of anticipation as dishes were compiled. Base gave us fine dining with some fancy, cheffy touches but (importantly!) nothing that felt like the idea was better than the execution: the flavours were great and the combinations well-matched. On our visit, the highlight on a night of high standards was the white onion and summer truffle broth, with a thyme and parmesan crouton (I'd advised them that my vegetarianism doesn't extend to only eating vegetarian cheese, so the parmesan was fine by me). A lighter (and beef-stock-free) take on French onion soup, there was savoury depth to complement the sweetness of the onion, with the truffle underlining things rather than scribbling all over them as can happen if it is used with too-heavy a hand.
Service was excellent, both friendly and attentive. The pacing of the evening felt just right too - no mean feat when every table gets its next course at the same time. Good luck to Mark and his team as the enter their second year at Base - I'm looking forward to visiting again when I next come over to Cumbria.
