No one manning the ice-cream counter on a hot day at lunchtime? Not good for business. This restaurant now run by the National Trust is ten times better than the previous very unpleasant refreshment venue.

This is a great place to stop if you're walking the Seven Sisters, and it's a useful refuge if the weather turns bad. The National Trust provide a wealth of local finds for visitors to see and the cafe is nicely stocked. It's also a good escape point on walks as there is a bus service.

breathtaking scenery, but be prepared to walk some hilly terrain- We suggest walking up the hill to Friston church from East Dean and then down through Crows Link to the downs and then back towards Birling Gap and the light house and then head back to East Dean -buy a lunch to take in East Dean before you leave, as the Birling Gap cafeteria is a bit disappointing

Birling Gap is well worth a visit for an hour or a day – pay for parking unless you are a National Trust member. There are terrific views along the coast, the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head and inland to the South Downs. Beach access is down a bunch of steps to a pebble beach – surprisingly popular.
There are great walks along the South Downs Way either west towards Cuckmere Haven and east to Beachy Head and the lighthouses. We did both directions and they are terrific but be aware that there is no shade or shelter so you are exposed on sunny hot days or wet and windy days. We hiked from BG to Cuckmere Haven, along the Cuckmere and back via Exceat (nice new visitor center with toilets) and Friston to the Tiger Inn at East Dean for lunch and then back to the car at Birling Gap – a decent hike of about 8 miles.
The café at the Birling Gap is basic with renovations underway for an expanded visitor center. Great for ice cream, snacks and tea/soda.
Birling Gap is a great place and well worth a repeat visit.
