Youth Enquiry Service
52-54 Frogmoor, High Wycombe, , HP13 5DG
Formed in 1982, the Youth Enquiry Service (YES) is a charity based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, that offers free and confidential support and counselling to 13-25year olds. YES is staffed 6 days a week and four evenings a week. We currently support 6,000 young people every year. YES is staffed by a bank of over 50 volunteers, who are DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checked and are carefully selected and trained to work with young people. Our counsellors are fully qualified, or in the final stages of training. Their case loads are carefully monitored by a supervisor, and all abide by The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). YES also works in close partnership with many other organisations, including Bucks County Council, with many of our counsellors working on behalf of YES in local schools. Our mission is to provide support which is consistently delivered as non-judgmental, supportive, inclusive and empowering. We work with young people experiencing a wide variety of social welfare issues; these include housing, debt, sexual health, education and employment. These can lead to a range of adverse consequences for young people, most commonly, stress; anxiety, depression, ill health, relationship breakdowns, lost income and lost confidence. YES works hard to improve the mental and emotional health of young people. In the last 12 months, YES has provided over 1,452 hours of free counselling. We work with young people to improve their problem solving skills, so the help we give has long term benefits. Around one in ten young people experience physical ill health as a result of their social welfare problems, with around half of these young people visiting a GP, hospital or other health care worker. However, 34% of young people getting advice from a youth advice agency self-reported that their health had improved as a result, with many eating more healthily or tackling smoking or drug habits. Last year we dealt with 1,620 social welfare issues. YES also runs a busy sexual health service. We offer a chance to talk about relationships, peer pressure and healthy, positive relationships. We can provide free condoms, pregnancy & Chlamydia testing and access to family planning nurses. Last year we supported 3,456 young people in our sexual health service By resolving issues and providing early intervention, we have not only helped over 85,000 people over the last 30 years, but also saved a substantial cost to wider society and the public purse. One estimate puts the cost of the unresolved problems experienced by 16-24 year olds at £1 billion per year. Wycombe is the most ethnically diverse of the districts in Bucks, with its non white population higher than the national and regional average. YES’s service users reflect this diversity; we help promote a cohesive, inclusive and strong community, with equal access to services and opportunities. Read more
