We stayed here as the hotel’s location was close to the wedding venue we attended, and thoroughly enjoyed our couple of nights here. We were comfortable throughout in our lovely spacious room, and had no issues at all during our stay. The staff were lovely, having a friendly disposition, and were helpful and informative. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay in this charming and well-run hotel, and our thanks go to the staff and management.

If you want an uncooked cold breakfast enjoy. Sausages pink in the middle bacon and black pudding cooked only on 1 side. Items missing.

The hotel room was lovely, the spa was an amazing experience. The food was tasty and great quality. Would 100% recommend, affordable and in a lovely location. Can be kind of difficult to get to when other things are going on around bolton.

Great stay, friendly staff, nice food and spa was a good quality. Overall a great stay and would return if ever in the area. Only reason I can’t give a 5* is there was no air conditioning in the rooms, normally not an issue but in the decent weather rooms were uncomfortably hot.

Had a lovely stay here on the weekend. Room was clean and ready for us on arrival though the decor is a little dated. Staff welcoming and friendly and I would like to mention Franco from the restaurant who really made our dining experience. He was great! Food was really nice and the breakfast in the morning was lovely.

When we arrived our room did not appear to have been prepared and it was stiflingly hot despite the window being open. We had booked a 2-night special ‘summer break’ but none of the expected extras were in the room. No water, just 2 tea bags and milks- and no phone in the room. So, to request the additional items involved a traipse down to reception. This however resulted in plentiful supplies of tea, milk, toiletries, chocolates and spa robes, much of which was brought by the lovely Ryan who also went and fetched us a fan to cool down the room. For water - apparently you’re supposed to go to the water cooler (‘hydration station’) near reception. Not convenient or customer focused : it comes across as way of saving on the provision of bottled water in rooms. Oh, and if you do have a phone in your room you can ask for ice to be delivered to your room - for a charge. Another traipse down to the bar for an ice bucket!
The room itself was surprisingly drab with old scuffed and worn furniture. OK, it had a sliding mirrored wardrobe but insufficient hangers and no skirt/trouser hangers. The bathroom was tight- the loo was a tight squeeze and I’m slim- anyone carrying weight might find it uncomfortable. Toiletries were provided in the bathroom but nothing special so we used the ESPA toiletries which came as part of our deal. Access to our room was up stairs and along a dingy corridor with worn old carpet and an uneven surface.
The reception area of the hotel is bright and welcoming and the staff are very pleasant and efficient as are the adjoining bar and lounge areas. However there’s not much about other areas that are bright. The main Courtyard Restaurant is truly oppressive with lots of black painted wood and a hideous dark brown painting on the wall, of what, and why it’s there, I know not. The pub across the courtyard is similarly dingy: I felt like I’d walked into a working men’s club. Not comfortable or salubrious.
The star of the hotel is the Spa which is well appointed with a great pool and thermal spa area etc, beautifully clean and well maintained. Pity the rest of the hotel doesn’t match it for style and surroundings. But it does justify your stay and compensates to some extent for the main hotel facilities.
This hotel is now an institution and seems to be rather resting on its laurels. From this recent experience my sense is that it’s time that attention is given to upgrading and refurbishing rooms and common areas as these are well past their best and firmly last century. As of now they certainly detract from the overall experience of staying in the hotel.
