Hi Don't leave it too late before ordering your Halloween costume this year. To make sure you are the scariest at this years party take a look at what's on offer at Lichfield Costume Hire they have loads to choose from. The origins of trick or treating and dressing up go back as far as the 16th century in Ireland, Scotland and Wales where people went door-to-door in costume asking for food in exchange for a poem or song. Many dressed up as souls of the dead, or Aos Si, and were understood to be protecting themselves from the spirits by impersonating them. The Christian origin of the holiday is that it falls on the days before the feast of All Hallows, which was set in the eighth century to attempt to stamp out pagan celebrations. Christians would honour saints and pray for souls who have not yet reached heaven. This weekend we have the added bonus of an extra hour to enjoy Halloween as we say goodbye to British Summertime for 2016. With most of our gadgets correcting themselves these days it's easy to forget to alter the clock on the oven or the important central heating boiler. Germany became the first country to implement DST, on 30 April 1916, in order to save fuel for the war effort. Thereafter, other countries followed suit and the concept was adopted by Britain on 21 May 1916. Well if it's been working for a 100 years who are we to argue!
