Founded in Woodbridge in 2011 by two experienced architecture professionals, Plaice Design describe themselves as 'place makers' – architects who strive to weave buildings and spaces into the surrounding landscape, touching all the senses. They specialise in environmentally responsible architecture and have a wide knowledge of sustainable building techniques, products and materials.

The business’s two principals Nick and Chris are down-to-earth, approachable architecture professionals who enjoy exchanging ideas with clients and who aren’t afraid of budgets and schedules; practicality and real-world constraints will not be sacrificed to highbrow ideals at Plaice Design.

Despite this, Plaice Design approach every project with the aim of creating buildings with ‘personality’, analyzing the project brief and seeking opportunities for their inventive use of space and materials. They seek to “build well”, for example to involve craftsmen to add to the character of a building, or to find unexpected and unique solutions to problems, striving always to create a perfect marriage between building and landscape.

The use of simple details, or contrasting materials, creates building with a timeless quality and a sense of identity, yet innovative ideas and materials are carefully woven into designs to ensure the building is practical as well as beautiful.

Again in their words this is “place making” rather than just building. This approach has resulted in Nick and Chris, during their careers, receiving numerous RIBA and Civic Trust Awards for design quality in public and community architecture.

Whether your project is the sympathetic extension of a listed cottage near Woodbridge, or an eco-friendly new-build on an urban plot in Ipswich, Plaice Design offer a concept-to-completion service covering all the tricky planning and regulatory issues.
