I currently have a van out on hire from Hunts, it is a 2007 (six year old van) with 120,000 miles on the clock. The engine makes a very strange noise on idle, it crunches into reverse gear and basically feels every single one of its 120,000 miles. When we did the inspection the representative was hustling me to sign before I pointed out five further points of damage to the body work and number plate. The price for the hire is £60 per day. On the fourth day the van developed a puncture, I took it in for repair, I was told by the very arrogant and aggressive owner of the business that it was my fault and that would have to pay. I was and am still annoyed about his imprecise accusation and his lack of customer service skills..I did ask him to show me in the contract that I had signed about customer liability, he went very quiet at that point and failed to show me. I was told that the new tyre would be £40. The reason I was hiring the van is my van is in for a clutch repair, a tyre for my van is £100, branded with strong reinforcing mesh through the tyre, I have driven 14,000 miles on my branded tyres without any serious puncture They use cheap unbranded tyres and wonder why they get punctures. Everything about the hire experience was second rate, the van was old and in fairly poor mechanical order, cheap tyres, poor service for £60 per day? That is the same rate you would pay with one of the big companies for a new van!! This kind of company is stuck in a time warp, if you want a decent reliable new hire van do yourself a favour stick with the big companies on the internet.
Reply from Andrew M: After investigating this issue we would like to provide the following response:
Mr O'Connor hired a vehicle from us for one week for his gardening business. On the fourth day of his hire term, the customer’s vehicle got a puncture, positioned right on the shoulder of the tyre, so making it irreparable.
All tyres are the responsibility of the hirer, as is standard practice throughout the van rental business. Our Service Manager charged Mr O'Connor £40, which was a contribution towards the cost of a new tyre, a cost that is calculated from the percentage of tread left on the tyre. It is our opinion that this is the fairest way of charging. If the customer was unhappy with his rental vehicle we would happily have exchanged it for him as we run a fleet of over 60 Transit vans.
Mr O’Connor was charged £30.95 per day, not £60 as suggested. All our vehicles are serviced and maintained by our own Service Workshops and MOT Station, which had a total refurbishment in 2012 and operates all the latest equipment and technology. Had Mr O'Connor got his rental vehicle repaired in our Workshops he would have been eligible for a free replacement van hire.
We are always happy to try and resolve any issues our clients may experience, and we strive to provide a professional service at all times.
