Will drones be carrying our bags for us while we navigate around a shopping centre on ‘hover-shoes’? Or will a giant rollercoaster whiz above our heads while we drink down a trendy coffee infused with moon dust? Who knows!

The Watford Observer has teamed up with intu Watford to invite schools to get their creative juices flowing over the summer break and look into the future of retail in the year 2068. There is a prize of £200 for the best entry plus another £200 for their school, together with prizes for 2nd and 3rd place.

So families, tell us what a shopping centre should look like in 50 years. Grab your pens and pencils and either draw your futuristic centre or tell us in no more than 100 words. You could win a £200 intu Gift Card – as well as a second one for your school!

“Retail has moved so quickly over the past few years and we are currently creating a new shopping future in Watford,” said Vicki Costello, general manager at intu Watford.

The shopping centre is near completion of its £180m development, which will see 13 new retailers, 11 new restaurants, an IMAX Cineworld, Hollywood Bowl and a four-storey Debenhams begin to open from September this year.

Vicki adds: “It’s an exciting time for us and for Watford and who knows what the next 10, 20 or 50 years will bring to the town? Our project, in partnership with the Watford Observer, is a great way for the younger generation to share their thoughts and visions on how they envisage the future of shopping to be.”

The project is open to all schools in and around Watford as a summer holiday activity. It is for children aged 7 to 11 to work on alone or with their parents/guardian as a family task.
