The Age of Romance - a thing of the past?

I read somewhere that in the United States St Valentine's Day is known by some as "Singles Awareness Day.  And they say Americans have no sense of irony!

Back in the 17th Century St Valentine's Day was writ large in the diaries of the well-to-do. Ladies (married or single) could "invite" any gentleman of their choice to be their valentine for the day. This was an honour and a responsibility not to be taken lightly and said "gentleman" would present himself at his "lady's" appartment first thing in the morning to prepare breakfast and to attend generally to his lady's needs throughout the whole day. Let's face it if he had two requests or more he was in trouble. Of course this was not really about "romance" it was more courtly love but who's going to complain?

Times have changed but here at thebestof we've been asking and we continue to ask "Who do you love?" Maybe not love exactly - more who can you really recommend? Who are your Local Heroes? During our 14 days of love promotion many business members as diverse as Dani at Nails by Dani and Dick at Fastsigns have put on loads of new testimonials, simply because they are loved by their customers.

Keep those testimonials for your favorite businesses flowing in and let us know if you can recommend a great local business. Remember, we only promote the best local businesses that have been recommended by you, so if you know a "Local Hero" do let us know.
