Charter Place, Watford's 70s built shopping centre, is closer than ever to a major redevelopment after the Council opted to move forward with discussions with a developer.
Capital Shopping Centres, who have other nearby interests in the town centre, plan to lease Charter Place from the council before redeveloping the area and then merging it with the Harlequin Centre - which is already operated by the company.
The move will see a significant increase in the retail, entertainment and leisure facilities and raising the importance of Watford town centre, both regionally and nationally.
“We are delighted that CSC has come forward with what are very exciting proposals for Charter Place,” said Mayor Dorothy Thornhill MBE.
“We’ve always been committed to ensuring that the redevelopment delivers both the best scheme and financial return possible.
"This redevelopment is much needed and will ensure we get the fantastic regional shopping centre and facilities right in the heart of our town centre that local people deserve.”
