Burn off the calories with nature conservation

Overdone it a bit this Christmas?

On average, people will consume as many as 6,000 calories on Christmas Day alone. With the big roast dinner, rich puddings, beer, wine, nuts and snacks, it’s easy to pile on the pounds.

If you find running or jogging a little bit dull (you’d actually need to run sixty miles to burn off 6,000 calories!!) then why not try some physical exertion that might be more interesting by joining in with local nature conservation?

Watford has several parks and open spaces which a wide variety of wildlife call home. Local residents and other partners are working with Watford Council on the nature conservation programme.

There are conservation events at Cassiobury Park and at Colne River throughout January, with the most regular being the ‘Green Gym’ by the river every Tuesday and Thursday. You don’t need to be experienced, as there will be an expert on hand to show you what to do, and tools are also provided.

You can stay for an hour or for the full day if you like, but remember to wear some old clothes!

Give the event organisers a call on 01923 278333 to check everything is still running as planned, then turn up for activities such as bird box maintenance, scrub management and other conservation work. Burn off all the Christmas excesses and get a real sense of achievement at the same time.
