Pele’s advice might well have been used by Gary Hamel and CK Prahalad as a one sentence introduction for their seminal book Competing for the future.
Their message is simple: any company that can’t imagine the future won’t be around to enjoy it. So the key to long term success, paradoxically, is not to be led by customers. It is not even to lead customers to where they want
to go. Instead, they claim, it is to lead customers where they don’t yet know that they want to go. After all, 30 years ago did anybody know that they wanted Post It Notes, the World Wide Web or an iPhone?
