Telephone Scammers Targeting Isle of Man

Isle of Man police are once again warning the public of phone scammers who have been targeting the Island.

The fraudsters, knowing they are ringing a Manx number, purport to be from the Isle of Man Constabulary Fraud Squad.

The 'cold caller' then asks the person to key in certain numbers on their telephone keypad in order that they are connected to the Isle of Man Fraud Squad.

The Constabulary say they want to reassure the public that they do not use any automated call centres and officers calling members of the public do so directly and introduce themselves with their name and rank.

Sergeant Andy Pailor said, "These scammers are obviously technologically savvy and are using the Constabulary's name in order to gain the trust of the people they are calling. The details you are asked to key into the phone are likely to be personal account details which can subsequently be used to access your bank account or credit card. If you have received one of these calls and followed the callers instruction, please contact your bank immediately".

Should anyone receivesuch calls, the advice from the police is to not engage with the caller, simply hang up the phone. The matter can be reported to the Police using a special website, www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by calling them direct on 0300 123 2040.
