The summer months can take a toll on your usual routine. Here local Weight Watchers leaders share some handy healthy life lessons that are easy to adopt, and will take you straight to the top of the weight-loss class

Now is the perfect time to get back to basics with your weight loss and wellbeing routine.

So far this year, island Weight Watchers members have clocked up an amazing 12,057lb (861 stone 3lb).

The changes have seen members fit into the wedding dress of their dreams, renewing their vows, feeling fitter and healthier, and achieving challenges they never thought they would do. One member is even celebrating 30 years at their goal weight!

Weight Watchers leaders Annette, Bev, Caroline, Lyndsey and Tania share their tips on how to get your new weight loss ‘term’ off to a flying start.

• Maths. Don’t let the promise of big weight loss numbers lead you into unhealthy habits.

We recommend a healthy and sustainable weight loss of 1-2lb per week so think of milestones over the next few months that you can work towards, think of how many weeks away they are and times it by two to get a realistic weight loss goal.

• English. Keep a food diary of everything you eat or document your efforts online to help you see when you are snacking without realising it, and help pin point when you are most likely to reach for the biscuit tin. Note successes along the way too.

• PE. Increase your physical activity gradually by making small changes – walk to school with the children, walk to work or enrol in a fun fitness class such as Zumba or Pilates.

Aim for 30 minutes of activity at least five times a week – but go at a pace that is right for you, and increase it when you feel ready.

• Home Economics. Cooking from scratch can be really rewarding and is a lot healthier than using prepackaged foods or sauce.

There are loads of delicious recipes at www.weightwatchers.co.uk or in Weight Watchers cookbooks.

• Science. As you start making small, subtle changes, you’ll notice the biological impact it’s making on your body – you will gradually lose weight and feel fitter. Eating more fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty of water will improve the condition of your skin, hair and nails.

• History. If you overindulge one day, don’t let it spoil the rest of your week. Put it in the past and get straight back on track by re-starting your healthy intentions.

• Geography. Enjoy your surroundings! Why not take a walk around your local village, the area you work in during your lunch break or further afield at the weekend.

Thirty minutes of brisk walking will get your heart pumping, and can help lower blood pressure.

Weight Watcher meetings are held across the island.
