The Youth Arts Centre (YAC) has released its programme of workshops and sessions which are taking place during the summer holidays including plays, a dance boot-camp, a writing workshop and improvisation sessions all aimed at a performance at the end of the week.

“Participants will learn how to put on a musical, make sets and costumes and have a lot of fun,” said Head of Youth Arts Fiona Helleur.

“This is one of the most enjoyable times of the year and gives young people the chance to be really creative in a lot of different ways.  This summer programme has been designed around the four core elements of performing arts and includes music, dance, drama and the written word together in four very different weeks. We have a first class team and we are really looking forward to it. ”

Time Lord is a musical play about time travel aimed at young people aged 8 – 14, with a working Dalek to be completed during the week July 27 – 31. The play tells the story of children who meet a mysterious Time Lord with the power to travel through the ages and takes his young companions on an adventure through time to find clues to solve a mystery.

The Improvisation workshop is with Kat Ash, a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama and will explore the fundamentals of dramatic improvisation and develop skills in creative thinking, self-confidence, listening, brainstorming, team building, empathy and communication, culminating in a showcase of the result before an audience in the Youth Arts Theatre. Aimed at young people aged 11 – 16, it takes place during the week of August 3 – 7.

The five Day Dance Boot-camp, August 10 – 14, is designed for young dancers aged 8-14 to further their dance experience and includes full days of Irish dance, ballet, contemporary, tap and jazz, all requirements for those hoping to get into dance or drama colleges. Led by dance teacher Susannah Hodgson who runs ballet and contemporary classes for the YAC as well as her very successful performing arts school Theatrix.

The Writers Workshop takes place between August 17 – 21 and gives the opportunity for aspiring young authors and playwrights aged 11 – 18 to learn all aspects of the art of writing from inspiration to the page, and from the page to the stage; they will be challenged to write a short story or play that will be performed in the Youth Arts Centre Theatre at a later date and their week will culminate in a read through of what they have achieved.

All sessions and workshops are from 10.00am – 4.00pm and costs £100. There is an extended day option of 8.30am– 6.00pm, which costs £125.00 per week.
