Originally a barley bread (wheat was not common grain on the Isle of Man from the mid 19th century the recipe has included dried fruit and white wheat floour. It's quick and easy to make and really yummy so why not have a go> There are many variations on the recipe but this one seems to work well.

Manx Bonnag

Ingredients

  • 225g Laxey Glen Mills Soda Bread Flour
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 110g sultanas
  • 110g margarine
  • 140mls (1/4 pint) buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Preparation

  1. Rub the margarine into the flour.
  2. Add the sugar and saltanas.
  3. Beat the egg and buttermilk together and add to the mixture and beat well.
  4. Shape into a round loaf shape and score a cross on the top.
  5. Bake in the oven for about an hour at 180°C.
