Here at ‘thebestof’, we’d like to say a massive thank you and well done to local hero Staff Sergeant Kim Hughes who was awarded the George Cross.

As we go about our daily lives in Shropshire, it’s impossible for us to comprehend the heartbreaking tragedies, life-changing terror and chaos unfurling on the frontline in Afghanistan.

But bomb disposal expert Kim has not only lived with the reality of war for much of his recent life, he has also been responsible for saving lives, with such honour, bravery and modesty that it takes our breath away.

The George Cross is the highest bravery award for valour not in the presence of the enemy. Kim, assigned to the Royal Logistic Corps, placed himself in deep peril some three times by defusing devices by hand.

He was trying to clear a path for five wounded soldiers last summer near a town called Sangin.

We can’t imagine how proud Kim’s mum Frances must be as she accompanies her son to The Palace. But neither can we, as we settle into our office chairs, imagine what it’s like for Kim and his colleagues serving in Afghanistan.

We hope and pray that they can come home soon to join their mums, partners and children.

And to Telford soldier Kim, we say: “Thank you, we salute you.”
