Having sprung up in 2014, Dry January encourages us to abstain from alcohol for the month of January.
Last year over 2 million people in the UK cut down their drinking for the month of January. With 2016 looking to be even bigger, why not accept the challenge and see if you can stay off the booze for 31 days!
UK charity, Alcohol concern are driving the initiative which has significant health benefits including weight loss and better sleep, to more money in your pocket. What have you got to lose? The campaign aims to raise awareness of alcohol related problems and educate people about the health benefit of not drinking.
Dry January can help wonders for your figure and appearance. After the Christmas binge, most of us will be carrying excess weight. Alcohol contributes to weight gain by reducing your metabolism, as the body breaks down alcohol first, so fats and sugars are burnt off slower.
Your skin will also see the benefits; reducing your alcohol intake will help improve skin and reduce the dehydrating effect alcohol has, which can give skin an unhealthy colour and texture. Remember to drink lots of water!
Not only is it nice not to have a hangover, the sense of achievement for finishing your month is great! Plus statistics show that most people drink less booze even after the month is over!
You can do this and raise money at the same time. Fundraising is optional, but it's a great way to incentives yourself and raise money for a good cause.
Dry January is not a medical detox programme. If you have serious concerns about your alcohol consumption it is important to seek help. Long-term excessive drinking can lead to health complications, such as liver disease and cancer, as well as mental health problems including depression and anxiety.
