This year’s pantomime at Oakengates Theatre is to stage a special ‘relaxed performance’ of Snow White for children and adults who may not be comfortable in a traditional theatre setting. This exclusive performance is for people who have a learning disability, an Autism Spectrum Condition, learning difficulties or other sensory and communication needs.

Billed as a "relaxed performance" it will be staged during the day on Sunday January 3, with theatre bosses predicting the experience will be "a first" for many in the audience.

Panto producer Paul Holman said: “The house lighting will be left on as darkness can often be frightening and we will be removing any special effects, such as strobe lighting and noises that could be too loud and alarming.

“Theatre can sometimes be perceived as a stuffy experience when people have to sit still and be quiet during the performance but it is the complete opposite at a relaxed performance. If anyone needs to move around or react vocally, they are free to do so.”

There will also be a quiet zone where people can unwind and then return to the auditorium when they are ready.

"This is a great way of offering a warm and inclusive welcome to people affected by autism or learning disabilities giving families, schools and groups the chance to experience high quality live theatre, often for the first time."

Snow White runs from December 8 until January 3, 2016.
