G. N. Badley & Sons, based in Gibbons Road, Trench, aimed to increase sales by putting on a number of offers and events as a way of celebrating opening their store in March 1976.

The family-run business, which supplies meat across the UK via it’s website and locally from it’s store, sold around 100kg of sausages, 50kg of dry cured bacon and 95kg of minced beef during last month.

It equates to 25per cent more sausages, 35per cent more dry cured bacon and 20per cent more cuts of meat than last year.

The pork pies - handmade on site - also flew off the shelves, with 327 being snapped up by hungry customers in comparison to 281 during March last year.

Operations director Kay Badley, whose husband Keith set up the business along with his father Gordon, said the anniversary month was very special.

She said: “We put on a number of offers during March and we also celebrated events like National Butchers Week and National Pie Week too.

“There was a great sense of celebration around the business and all our customers were congratulating us and getting involved.

“It was great to be able to put on a real month of constant celebration.

“And the sales figures speak for themselves - I can’t imagine what this is like compared to the very first year we had in business back in 1976, unfortunately we don’t have statistics from back then.”

Mrs Badley runs the business with her son Simon since Keith died in 2011.

They have six staff and have transformed the firm from a wholesale and catering focused company to a more retail focus with a thriving website.

Simon added: “We are really enjoying celebrating 40 years in business this year and last month was very special.

“We appreciate all our customers who have been in to help us mark the occasion, but it’s very important to us to keep up the level of quality and standard of customer service all day every day.

“The fact we are celebrating our 40th anniversary this month shows just how strong we are.

“We remain loyal to our customers and we recognise what they need. We know that people like a personal touch, which supermarkets cannot offer.

“We give advice on the right cut, how to cook the meat, what works well for different recipes and all that is knowledge is lacking from a supermarket counter.”

As part of National Butchers Week, which is run by the Meat Trades Journal, G. N. Badley & Sons entered their senior butcher Lee Evans into a competition for the ‘sexiest’ butcher for his charm with customers and business focus.
The competition saw Lee get a lot of attention online and featured profiles on him in the national Meat Trades Journal magazine.
