Starting nursery – what to expect

When your child starts nursery, it can be a scary, emotional and exciting all at the same time and whilst you may have conducted a lot of research into the best nursery school to send your child to, there's no doubt you will be feeling a little worried for you and your child – so we have come up with a list of tips to help before the big day arrives:

Visit the nursery beforehand – a great way of selling the fun and excitement to your child. Draw your child’s attention to things they like e.g. crafts, music, books. Talk about other children (their friends) who may also be going there.
Brief the staff – inform your child’s teachers of any likes, dislikes, fears etc. The more informed they are, the better time your child will have.
Positive vibes – share positive ideas with your child. Tell them upbeat stories of your time at school.
Read a Nursery story – there are plenty “starting school” books you can buy to help them understand this new stage in their lives.
Keep smiling – no matter how emotional you are feeling about your child’s first day of school, don’t show it.
Don’t run back – leave when you say you are going to leave, don’t run back at the sight of tears
Easy dressing – dress your child in clothes that are easy to take on and off e.g. Velcro fastened shoes
Make new friends – talk to other mums – don’t be shy!
