R&R Kitchens in Telford ask. What is the real cost of a new kitchen?

Like any home improvement it is not an exact science, but I would consider a typical order value range to be between £4,000.00 and £20,000.00.

That’s a broad range so we look at how your kitchen costs might be built up.

Site clearance and preparation and building work.

Removal of an old kitchen is very fast and if you have a decent kitchen we will list on ebay on your behalf. This will save the cost of a skip and saves the planet in a small way as it reduces land fill waste and emissions.

The price we will get for your old kitchen will depend on a lot of factors but we have sold them from £1.00 to £750.00. The more contemporary designs are the popular ones with bidders but anything will sell at a price.

Skips cost between £100.00 and £160.00 so it’s a saving on that expense at least even if it sells for just £1.00.

A big part of our business is our in-house building services and ability. A lot of people want a large kitchen or kitchen diner as more time is spent in the kitchen than ever. We can easily remove walls even if they are supporting walls and costs again vary, but a guide for a supporting wall would be £1500.00 to £2000.00 plus a building notice is usually required when removing structural walls.

We will also quote for an extension and have architects that will assist with the design and we offer a complete turn-key service from start to finish for any project.

Electrics, wiring and lighting.

Electrics have historically been something that a fitter has done himself. Since 2008 the standards have raised significantly and all electrical work now requires compliance to the latest standards for your safety and well being. You will need an RCD protected fuse board and earthing to comply with currents standards, if there is any work required to alter circuits. Costs can vary again but we charge approx £50.00 per down light and £60.00 per power point as required for your design. A new board can run to £450.00 and earth work approx £200.00 if required.

Plastering and making good.

When tiles are removed walls often require plastering. Our fitters will make good basic plastering but a professional service will cost between £250.00 and £500.00 depending on what is required by area. If you have down lighters in the ceiling there is always an element of plastering required post first fixing of the necessary new wires/cables. This is the best time to re adjust how lighting is switched and this may also require plastering.

Kitchen Units Costs.

We will only fit a solid factory built cabinet that is colour coded to the closest match to your choice of door colour – we can do approx 70 colours.

Our cabinets are 18 mm thick furniture grade Egger Board which is amongst the best possible materials to produce stable kitchen furniture from. We use a soft close drawer box system called Blumotion and we believe this to be the best on the market. Costs again can vary a great deal but remember if you buy cheap cabinets they don’t last as long and the fitting cost is much higher than ours – typical range £2500.00 - £5000.00 or higher depending on the quantity of cabinets.

Doors & Work Surfaces.

The door and worktop choice will have quite an impact on cost and can vary from £130.00 for laminate and upto as much as £3000.00 for granite or quartz depending again on the area or linear meterage.

The doors also vary greatly in price from the cheaper Vinyl doors to the high gloss acrylic doors that are very popular at the moment. Handless doors that are 32 mm thick are also available and most stlyes come with curved door options and availability.

Remember your worktops and doors are the main focal point of your new kitchen style.

Kitchen Appliances.

Kitchen appliances also vary greatly in cost and I recommend that you avoid the cheapest and don’t pay too much attention to the reviews. As a nation we love to moan and rarely do we leave reviews if we are really happy – which is a shame!! A typical cost for a basic set of appliances is £1000.00 to £3000.00 depending on what is required.

We use www.cda.eu but will supply any appliances on the market.

Flooring.

Most flooring choices are durable to wear and tear and water damage. Tiles are the most common but we can help with tile purchases and these are based on a meter squared. Typical fitting is £40.00 per meter to include the removal if required of the old flooring and labour, adhesive and grout to fit the new tiles. The tiles themselves vary from £10.00 upwards but ceramic are the cheapest to buy and to lay, most natural surfaces such as slate, travertine or porcelain will need flexible adhesive which is approx £5.00 per meter on top.

Karndean is very popular and not as cold as tiles and works out about the same price for Knight tile. This is a very hard wearing vinyl strip that’s glued to a flat latex application. We advise that you avoid vinyl off a roll, wood or laminate in a kitchen.

I hope the above has been of some assistance. I would say that our typical order value varied between £5000.00 and £15000.00 for a new kitchen in the Telford area.

All prices are dependent on exactly what application and product is required and we are usually able to get a design to suit any sensible budget.

I have seen adverts for “all this bankrupt stock for less than £1000.00” – just remember this is usually cheap furniture from China and is rarely complete or damage free and you still have to get it fitted and that’s the expensive bit!

I strongly advise that you go with a local company that you feel you can trust to deliver your new dream kitchen and although the price is important; ask youurself when ever was the cheapest the best?

We offer a no obligation service for a free designer visit in your home and a no pressure quotation. We are happy to book a convenient appointment any evening to suit you if required, or weekend by appointment.

We cover Shropshire and West Midlands and our most popular areas are Telford and Walsall.
