The Trustees, staff & volunteers at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums were said to be ‘over the moon’ when they heard the news that the Olympic Flame will be visiting the World Heritage Site as part of next year’s Torch Relay. Whilst exact details of the route are still under cover, it was revealed today that the Torch will be carried over the great Iron Bridge which has stood for hundreds of years as a symbol of the Industrial Revolution; it will then be carried along the River Severn before travelling on to Telford.
Steve Miller, Chief Executive, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust commented;
“The Ironbridge Gorge Museum has played a large part in the preparations for London 2012 since we hosted the launch of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands in 2008. We have delivered numerous exhibitions and events all connected with the London 2012 Games and next year we will be launching CORE, a magnificent digital art installation by international artist Kurt Hentschläger, which will be a key part of the London 2012 Festival. It is a wonderful bonus that this area has been selected to welcome the Torch Relay.
We are sure that it will attract a huge crowd of well-wishers, all keen to see the Torch before it moves elsewhere in the UK. It is just one more way that people from Shropshire can have their own London 2012 moment and join in the celebrations.”
The museum is currently running two exhibitions as part of the Cultural Olympiad’s ‘Stories of The World’ initiative, The Science of Sport at Enginuity and Sporting Heroes at the adjacent Coalbrookdale Gallery. Both exhibitions will run until the end of the Games in September 2012. The Museum is also being supported by West Midlands for 2012 and is part of ‘The Games and Me’ initiative.
From March 23rd 2012, visitors will be able to visit CORE, a brand new digital art installation by international artist Kurt Hentschläger, where visitors will be able to glimpse into a weightless world populated by humanoid figures.
