Lanyon Bowdleer support local charity Headway.

Local law firm Lanyon Bowdler’s show garden project on behalf of Headway Shropshire has taken an educational turn.  Mike Russell, the award-winning designer behind the garden, attended Headway Shropshire’s garden at Oxon Business Park on Thursday 1 July to provide the staff and clients with an informal horticultural therapy and planting workshop.

The show garden challenge, the brainchild of Lanyon Bowdler’s Business Development and Marketing Manager, Amanda Jones, is aimed at raising the profile of Headway Shropshire and the work they do.  The charity provides support to those who have suffered head/brain injuries, and the facilities at Oxon Business Park offer a place to socialise and re-learn basic skills - such as gardening and cooking.  The clients at Headway Shropshire have been involved from the outset in the show garden project, providing them with an opportunity to focus on a unique and interesting project, whilst also taking part in a rehabilitative pastime.

The workshop had two aims, firstly to help clients learn more about the general maintenance of the produce they are currently growing for the show garden, such as potting up seedlings, watering requirements, and overall care of the plants, and secondly, to provide them with an opportunity of a therapeutic, rehabilitative and fun gardening experience.

Mike Russell, an RHS Silver Gilt Award Winner recognised for his exceptional visualisation and imagination, came up with the idea of the workshop to help and encourage the clients of Headway Shropshire.

Mike says “gardening is renowned for being highly therapeutic, especially for people who have suffered a head injury, and therefore I thought it would be ideal to work on the garden at Headway Shropshire whilst at the same time giving the workshop to clients, providing them with a therapeutic gardening experience, and hopefully, aiding their rehabilitation”.

Rachel Donaghey, Marketing Assistant at Lanyon Bowdler comments “the feedback from the Headway Shropshire clients involved in this workshop has been really positive.  They enjoy getting outdoors and being able to demonstrate their gardening abilities, and feel proud of their contribution towards the show garden”.

Lanyon Bowdler’s show garden project is receiving much interest and support, and progress can be followed online at http://headwayshowgarden.wordpress.com.
